Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
