The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
